Lussier and Achua define culture as, â€Å"the aggregate of beliefs, norms, attitudes, values, assumptions, and ways of doings things that is shared by members of an organization and taught to new members.† (p. 358). The culture of an organization can take time to develop and once it has been cemented it can be difficult to change. Organizations can change their culture from within or bring in new leadership to change their culture. Leaders can shape the culture of their organization by either substantive or symbolic leadership styles. This essay will distinguish between symbolic and substantive leadership actions that can be used to shape an organization’s culture. The culture of an organization can have a lot of power. An organizations culture can create unity and help the organization adapt to the external environment. The leadership of an organization has an enormous amount of influence and responsibility in regards to the strategy, structure, practices, and policies of the organization and ensuring they fall in line with the organizations culture. According to Lussier and Achua, â€Å"Substantive actions are explicit and highly visible and are indicative of management’s commitment to a new way of doing things.† (p. 364). When new leaders try to initiate change they can encounter employees or members of their organization that are resistant to change and are stuck in the old-culture.
